RESPONSIBILITIES:
The duties of the Surgery Coder are of high volume, and
the quality of duties performed is needed to be at a high level. The employee will come
into contact on a daily basis with confidential patient and physician files. The Surgery
Coder must be able to handle this information with the highest degree of privacy,
discretion, and professionalism. The Surgery Coder is responsible for accomplishing the
duties set forth below:
General Clerical Activities (There may be other duties required of this position not
listed below):
1. Reviews and codes for Procedure (i.e. CPT) and Diagnosis (i.e. ICD-10) codes on
all operative reports for elective and trauma surgeries.
2. Maintains a monthly log of all surgeries coded.
3. The Surgery Coder will primarily be responsible for reviewing and billing any
unbilled services for previous months. Since this process requires a more
thorough review, the Surgery Coder will work closely with the Billing and
Collections Manager to make sure monthly goals are completed in the manner
expected.
4. The Surgery Coder must bill a minimum of forty (40) claims a day per eight (8)
hour day. The process includes reviewing, coding and charge entry.
5. All completed services need to be billed within a forty-eight (48) hour period.

Skill Requirements:
1. Education: High school diploma or equivalence.
2. The ability to type 40 words per minute.
3. Skill in operating a computer and scanner, as well as software programs including
Outlook.
4. Telephone etiquette and professional communication skills are required.
5. Must be able to work under strict deadlines.
6. Should be able to interpret documentation and have a basic knowledge of coding
levels.
7. Must be proficient in CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS, RBRVS, Medical Terminology and
Modifier 95 & 97 guidelines of E&M.
